HOMEWORK

Homework is a consolidation of what has been learned in school. Learning homework is as important as written homework. An appropriate amount of homework is alloted to your child during the week. Please ensure that it is done with care. Children work at different rates and will complete the same homework in different time scales. Time spent will vary from day to day and also from the beginning to the end of the school year. It is important to remember that it is the quality not the quantity of homework that matters. The following are recommedended guidelines only.

RECOMMEDED MAXIMUM TIME TO BE SPENT

Rang 2 30 MINS
Blackboard
Rang 3 30 - 45 MINS
Rang 4 45 MINS
Rang 5 45 MINS - 1 Hr
Rang 6 1hr - 1hr 30 MINS

SOME PRACTICAL SUGGESTIONS
1. Set suitable times for doing homework that take account of other needs such as recreation and family circumstances
2. Set a reasonable amount of time for doing homework.
3. Make sure that children have to proper physical condition for doing homework - a quiet time, a clear table, helpful books such as dictionaries etc.

4. Get in touch with the school at an early stage if the child is having difficulties with homework.

Occasional failure to do homework is remedied at the discretion of the class teacher. Constant Failure to do homework will mean that parents/guardians of the child will be contacted.

PARENT TEACHER MEETINGS

1. There is an opportunity to discuss your child's progress with his teacher during the year.
2. Parents are notified of these meetings
3. If you regard it necessary to meet the teacher at other times you are welcome, but this must be by appointment
4. Interruption of classes is discouraged.

HEALTHY EATING POLICY

Through our healthy eating policy the John F. Kennedy Memorial school aims to help all those in our school community; children, staff and parents in developing positive and responsible attitudes to eating and to appreciate the contribution that good food makes to health.Nutrition, i.e. what people eat, is known to be one of the key factors influencing their health and well-being. All children bring a packed lunch to school in addition to a snack for the morning break. Food is also a feature of school celebrations. The taught curriculum provides an opportunity to teach about food and healthy lifestyles.

It is the policy of our school that:

• Healthy lunches be encouraged and fizzy drinks, sweets, bars, chocolate and crisps be discouraged.

• A healthy lunchbox includes a piece of food from each of the bottom four shelves

of the Food Pyramid. e.g. ham sandwich, carton of orange juice and strawberry yogurt.

• Friday is treat day. On this day one piece of food from the top shelf of the Pyramid may be included.

• Cans and glasses are not permitted for safety and litter reasons. Healthier choices for drinks include water, milk and unsweetened fruit juice.

• Foods, which have wrappers, are best kept to a minimum. All food wrappings must be brought home and we encourage the use of lunchboxes and reusable bottles for drinks.
