On October 24th JFK’s under 13 football team played in the final of the cup against St. Brigid’s. There was a sense of excitement as we gathered in the school hall to put on our jerseys. We walked to the Gaelic Grounds and left down our bags in the dressing rooms before making our way out to the pitch. The pitch was impeccable and we started our regular warm-up. Mr.Dillon and Mr.Fahey called out the team. Some mums and dads had come down to cheer us on.
At 10 o’clock the referee threw in the ball and we were under way. After 5 minutes we were leading 1-00, thanks to Mark Hogan and by half time we were up by 3 goals and a point thanks to Daragh Jordan, Lloyd Costelloe and Colin O’Donnell.
We knew we had to keep our game up because there were only 3 or 4 kicks of the ball between us and St. Brigid’s. Their strong midfield had threatened us throughout the first half and the game was far from over.
During the second half we continued to put the pressure on thanks to our solid full back line. This included Thomas Fitzgerald, Leon Tobin, Finn Connolly and Matthew Collopy in goals. As the minutes went by we felt the excitement building. Then the moment came, we had won!! We ran on to the pitch and celebrated with our teammates. We climbed the steps of the Gaelic Grounds and our captain, Richard Curtin, was on hand to lift the trophy. Everyone got to hold the cup as we strolled to the dressing room.
The celebrations didn’t stop there as we were told we were going to Supermac’s! We had a great day and it was a fantastic feeling to take part in a final in the Gaelic Grounds. JFK ABÚ!
